Using stabilisation geogrids like Tensar® TriAx® as an example, it is regularly possible to reduce the thickness of aggregate layers under trafficked areas like roads and car parks by 50% and maintain, or even improve, overall performance. These geogrids laterally restrain the aggregate particles and stabilise them thereby providing a stiffened layer that performs better than significantly thicker layers without stabilisation. Huge aggregate savings are possible. Additionally, reduced aggregate thicknesses usually means less excavation and disposal.
